About European Patents
The patent procedure established by the European Patent Organization (EPO) provides a cost-efficient single entry to have patent rights granted in multiple EPO member states. A single European Patent (EP) application is filed with the EPO, once granted it needs to be enforced through a validation procedure in each designated member state where protection is sought. The validation procedure is basically a matter of providing a translation of the application into the official language of the respective member state. The translation must be filed with the national patent office within certain time constraints and official fees paid.
